What is CCTV Video Baluns? How Does it work | CCTV FRIEND

What is Video balun?

CCTV Video balun is an essential accessory for installing Analog cameras over the UTP cables, also known as UTP baluns. It is a device designed to convert balanced signals to unbalanced signals. The Analog camera can work with twisted pair cables like Cat6 and Cat5e instead of RG-6 or RG-59 coaxial cables. With the help of this accessory, you can install cameras in a very cost-effective manner because Video Balun needs just one pair of UTP cables to work an Analog camera that's why one CAT6 cable can install 4 Analog cameras.

How Does a Video Balun Work?

CCTV balun work in the pair. If the wires are reversed then there is no image coming or no video on the monitor. Video Balun's working structure is like this-Unbalanced to Balanced conversion and after that Balanced to Unbalanced video signal conversion for getting the signal over the output.

Types of Video Baluns:

There are two types of Video Baluns available in the market.

Active Video Baluns

It requires external power to operate effectively. Active Video Baluns can transmit video signals over long distances while ensuring quality and integrity. This accessory can send high-resolution video signals, including HD and 4K over twisted pair cables.
Active Video Baluns can run distances up to approximately 500 Meters.
We do not suggest using active video baluns for more than 2 megapixels or 1080p supported cameras.

Passive Video Baluns

It does not require external power to operate and is less expensive than active video baluns. It can also send high-resolution video as well as 4K signal in short distances. It can run up to less than 200 meters.

Advantages of Video Balun:

  1. Cost Effective, generally video balun is relatively cheap.
  2. UTP Cable instead of Coaxial cable.
  3. Easy to install.
  4. An effective way to cable management is because coaxial cable is generally hard for cable management but UTP cable is easy to manage.
  5. Allow transmitting the signal over long distances.
  6. Reduce interference.

Disadvantages of Video Balun:

  1. It could not be better over a long period, you should have to change over some time to maintain the quality of CCTV cameras.
  2. All Baluns are not compatible with all types of cameras.

Conclusion:

Video Balun is a very essential accessory for the installation of Analog CCTV cameras. It can reduce the price of cabling because you can run 4 Analog cameras with the help of one UTP cable. It also helps to reduce EM(Electromagnetic) interference with the comparison of RG-59 or RG-6 coaxial cable. It provides plug and play environment so the installation is going to be very fast and easy. With the above quality, I recommend using Video Balun and UTP cable for the installation of  Analog cameras.
